Flush with Class

When we started this blog, we wanted to document our Tennessee adventures. We did at first, but law school started, and life got down to the business of being ordinary. But we still occasionally experience the local sites.

Last night, Lytton had the honor of using the bathroom in our nation’s premier restroom. No! I'm not kidding! A very reputable organization, (bestrestroom.com) tallied the votes, and named the men’s restroom adjacent to the Oak Bar at the Hermitage Hotel the best bathroom in America.

We’ve known this important national landmark was just a stone’s throw away for some time, so when I saw a Groupon for the Capitol Grille, the Hermitage restaurant, I snapped it up for the opportunity to check out such a momentous place.

Unfortunately, when we got there, we were informed the Oak Bar had been bought out for a few hours. So, instead we enjoyed cocktails in the lobby, which as you can see (to the left), is nothing to sneeze at. It’s a gorgeous room with a trompe l'oeil ceiling built in 1908.

Then we headed down to dinner in the Capitol Grille, a cavernous sedate restaurant. Sadly, the food was terribly disappointing. Underwhelming flavors, poor butchering of meat. A truffle mac and cheese that was truly offensive for its waste of a perfectly good truffle. You couldn't taste it! You couldn't taste anything! And the noodles were oddly large. So, in other words the usual Nashville culinary experience.

But after dinner, Lytton used the facilities! And I got to stick my head in. As you can see, it’s very art deco! I’m not sure that the pictures do it justice. I’m also not sure what the criteria for a “best bathroom” are, but we’re thrilled we’ve seen one!
